Overview
ISO management system standards set out how an organisation should plan, run, check and improve its processes. They are published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted in India by the Bureau of Indian Standards as IS/ISO standards.
Certification is the independent confirmation, by a certification body, that your management system meets the standard. In India, certification bodies are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB), part of the Quality Council of India. NABCB is a member of the International Accreditation Forum, so accredited certificates are recognised internationally. See https://nabcb.qci.org.in.
Aaditech’s role is that of a consultant. We help you design, implement and prepare your system. We do not certify it, and we keep that line clear, since the same organisation cannot both consult and certify impartially.
Who needs it
- Manufacturers supplying large customers, government departments and export markets.
- BIS licensees, whose quality systems are closely examined during factory inspections.
- Organisations with environmental or safety risks, such as chemical, electrical and engineering plants.
- Energy-intensive businesses aiming to cut energy costs.
- Service companies, laboratories and inspection firms seeking credibility with clients.
Standards covered
| Standard | Focus |
|---|---|
| ISO 9001 | Quality management systems |
| ISO 14001 | Environmental management systems |
| ISO 45001 | Occupational health and safety management systems |
| ISO 50001 | Energy management systems |
| ISO 22000 | Food safety management systems |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | Information security management systems |
| Integrated systems | Combined QMS, EMS and OHSMS |
Many organisations choose an integrated management system, running quality, environment and safety under one set of procedures, one internal audit programme and one management review. This reduces paperwork and audit days compared with separate systems. ISO 50001 fits well for energy-intensive plants, because the same energy data supports cost reduction and, for appliance makers, an understanding of the efficiency figures behind BEE star ratings.
Documents required
What a certification body will expect to see, which we help you build:
- Scope of the management system and context of the organisation
- Policy and objectives
- Risk and opportunity assessment
- Documented procedures and process records needed for your operations
- Training and competence records
- Calibration and maintenance records
- Internal audit reports and management review minutes
- Corrective-action records
Process
- Gap analysis of your current practices against the chosen standard.
- System design, keeping documentation lean and tied to how the business actually works.
- Implementation and training for management and staff.
- Internal audit by trained auditors, with corrective actions closed.
- Management review of system performance.
- Selection of an accredited certification body and application to it.
- Certification audit by the certification body, in two stages: a documentation and readiness review (stage 1) and an on-site assessment of implementation (stage 2).
- Certification by the certification body once any non-conformities are closed.
Validity, renewal & surveillance
Accredited certificates are normally valid for three years. The certification body carries out surveillance audits, usually annually, and a recertification audit before expiry. Standards are revised periodically, and certified organisations must transition to new versions within the period set by the IAF.
Note: Certification fees are charged by the certification body, not by us, and depend on scope, size and number of sites. We’ll give you our consultancy estimate and help you compare certification body quotes.
How Aaditech helps
Aaditech was promoted in 2010 by former Directors of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Our Chief Advisor, Mr Anupam Kaul, formerly headed standards and quality at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and chairs several BIS committees. We also run our own accredited quality system as an NABCB-accredited Type A inspection body under ISO/IEC 17020:2012 for electrical equipment, so we know what living with an accredited system involves.
- Gap analysis and a practical implementation plan.
- Documentation that fits your business, not a generic manual.
- Training for management, process owners and internal auditors.
- Internal audits and management review before the certification audit.
- Certification body selection guidance, including checking accreditation scope.
- Audit support during stage 1 and stage 2, and help closing findings.
- Alignment with BIS licence requirements for manufacturers who also hold ISI licences.
